WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

What is birth control medication?

Birth control medication, commonly referred to as "birth control pills" or "oral contraceptives," is a medication taken by individuals to prevent pregnancy. These medications contain hormones, usually synthetic versions of estrogen and progestin, which work together to inhibit ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries). Additionally, birth control pills thicken cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg. When taken consistently and correctly, birth control medication is a highly effective method of contraception, offering control over family planning and menstrual cycle regulation. There are different types and brands of birth control pills, and their use should be discussed with a healthcare provider to determine the most suitable option based on an individual's health and lifestyle.
