What is whooping cough?
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Exposure to whooping cough occurs when an individual comes in close contact with an infected person’s respiratory droplets through coughing or sneezing. Vaccination is the best protection, but infants and those not vaccinated are at higher risk.
Common symptoms
Symptoms of whooping cough may include:
- Cold-like symptoms (runny nose, mild cough, low-grade fever)
- Severe coughing fits (characterized by a "whooping" sound)
- Vomiting after coughing
- Exhaustion after coughing fits
