What is strep throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by the bacteria group A Streptococcus. It primarily affects the throat and tonsils, causing inflammation and pain. Strep throat is highly contagious and can spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It's more common in children but can affect people of all ages. Early treatment with antibiotics is important to prevent complications and the spread of the infection.
Common symptoms
Symptoms of strep throat may include:
- Sore throat that starts quickly
- Pain when swallowing
- Fever
- Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus
- Tiny red spots (petechiae) on the roof of the mouth
- Swollen, tender lymph nodes in the neck
